A big milestone, after installing the axles and wheel the airplane touched down on the mains for the first time.
There is not enough room between the AN4 and the axle for a normal socket. An old socket was grinded down until it fitted without scratching the axle:
Next step was packing the bearings with a grease gun and simple bearing packer tool:
After wiping off the excess of grease:
The inner race was greased a bit as well:
Note to install the axle with the holes for the cotter pin on the 12 o’clock position:
Since the thickness of the main gear differs a bit and the right axle spacer is tapered a combination of AN4-22A and AN4-23A bolts were used with thin and normal washers to have about 2 threads protruding. Too much protruding threads will conflict with the spats:
Final installation of the axle nut and cotter pin (according the manual) and cleaning up the remaining excess grease:
